JOB Title:   Fresh-Seafood-Market Upgrade and Operations Consultant

Project Title : Upgrading of local  fresh-seafood markets

Employer : Saudi Aquaculture Society

Duty Station :  Home based with mission visits to Saudi Arabia (KSA)

Duration :   6 months (part time)



The General Directorate of Aquaculture and Fisheries of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with the Saudi Aquaculture Society (SAS), is currently working on further developing the national fisheries and aquaculture sectors, as part of the country’s Vision 2030 for diversification of the economy.  Development of these sectors will support supply the market with high quality seafood products (all products of aquatic origin destined for human consumption).  

Under this prism, MEWA and SAS are also undertaking actions which aim to increase significantly the country’s per capita annual seafood consumption by:

  1. Increasing national supply of Fresh Fish from Aquaculture,
  2. Increasing public awareness towards the nutritional and dietetic value of seafood products as part of a modern and healthy diet, and
  3. Facilitating the marketing of such products under conditions that ensure product safety and quality.



The objective of this consultancy project is to provide guidelines and recommendations to national and local authorities towards the upgrading of the existing Fresh-Seafood markets to accommodate modern food quality, safety and hygiene standards.


Duties & Responsibilities

The consultant, under the close cooperation with the Director General of Aquaculture and Fisheries of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and the direct supervision of the SAS Secretary General and the SAS Technical Consultant, will have the following duties and responsibilities.

  • Understand the project challenges and transform them into process/technical suggestions.
  • Identify key areas towards the upgrading of the existing fresh-seafood markets to accommodate modern food quality, safety and hygiene standards.
  • Provide relevant recommendations and guidelines based on international standards and best practices.
  • Identify potential for the upgrading of the major fresh-seafood markets in KSA and propose actions for overcoming these bottlenecks.
